Often described as a still life, this former Caribbean bar remains a relic of a former time. With illuminated palm trees and a huge brown redundant bar, it still continues to celebrate a life that once existed. Invited artists were asked to set up a still life, it could be as elaborate or simple as they choose. Any arrangement such as a feather stuck into an orange, as specific or vague, as big or small as fits into the Caribic. In Babak Ghazi’s film, a camera scans slowly over the inside cover of Michael Jackson’s first autobiography Moonwalk (1988); a collection of Jackson’s personal possessions, silver glove, photos of children, make-up etc. Photographer Markus Krottendorfer chose a still projection of Kew Gardens London. Zak Prekop hangs a single perfect pine cone on the wall. Andrea Büttner’s mobile phone is placed on a fridge and continues to ring. Juliette Blightman requests Jonathan Richman’s Ice cream man (1977) to be played a single time during the evening. Marisa Argentato and Pasquale Pennacchio deliver a stack of framed self portraits along with travel trolley. Jonny Roofrack requires a large black bucket filled with mineral water, in it are floating a feather, an orange, a toothpick, a luminous glow-stick (all sent from different locations) and finally an old running shoe provided by the curator.
