Who is Mathieu Malouf? Does exposing his bare bottom give us
any clues? Under uncompromising interrogation with lamps, spots
and light bulbs, the images on display are being begged for
some answers. Fashioned stills, collections of sexually loaded
still life arrangements forced into the photo frame, a black
and white short film loop with lips seeking attention, naked
mannequins desperate to breathe, all hanging limply with the
occasional splash of glitter. Which gender is this provocation
aimed at? We’re not sure. Malouf presents us with two
evenings of "sex-reflectivity", complete
with artist publication and t-shirt printing, all using stylized
imagery that somehow reflects a sexless being in an idealized
fashion context.
The second evening, sitting comfortably amongst his creations,
Malouf discreetly entertains with a session of Jazz guitar and
laptop accompaniment, and as a result concludes the residency
answering our questions with even more questions. |
