Gallerist Mark Dickenson curates an exhibition based on the
song title What is not but could be if from the last
album of the recently disbanded American group Silver Jews (1989-2009).
For Dickenson it’s a simple question; things need to change
for new propositions to exist. Using the process of curating
to speak through others, Dickenson uses the title to question
larger imposing issues in an indirect manner. The open-ended
question of What is not but could be if can be applied
to every aspect of life, society and the world as such, searching
for the circumstances that would allow for the impossible or
unknown to happen. For example what would be the if-condition
for the Silver Jews to make another album? And what would it
be like?
Throughout the space we are presented with artists responses
to this question. Dan Rees designs record covers. Nicolas Ceccaldi
presents a laptop heart sculpture. Iori Wallace draws a diagram
with musical influences of the band. Sascha Hahn screens a film
remeniscent of a music video without sound. Morag Keil shows
a collage including a supposed letter from the Silver Jews founder
Dave Burman. Florian Roithmayer sends a print of hands. A reading,
ominous cocktails and suspicious broken egg shells are scattered
throughout the space by Simon Fujiwara. Alex Bruchlos performs
the song What is not but could be if live on acoustic
guitar. |
